Question #1

Part “A”

1. As discussed in class, please provide three reasons why visuals are important to web content. Please ensure you go into detail for each item. (6 Marks)

1. Attract attention – the probability that a person will start reading our article increases when we have images on our website. Because the first thing they do when they open web page they scan(skim), not read the content of the website.

It takes less time for a person to analyze images than analyze text.

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 4

“IT TAKES ONLY 13 MILLISECONDS FOR THE HUMAN BRAIN TO PROCESS AN IMAGE”

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 8

“The human brain processes visual information 60,000X faster than text”

So, in this case, if we have images on our website, it can help us catch a person’s attention faster and try to keep it.

2. Increase organic traffic – if a person clicked on our website and opened it does not mean that he will not leave this page if the visual layout of it is total text without paragraphs, bullet points and images.

All these things are important for better user experience.

Why are images important in web content?

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 5

“Infographics increase web traffic by an average of 12%”

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 6

“Viewers spend 100% more time on pages with visual content”

This data shows us that if we include images on our website, it will help us to increase engagement with our content.

It happens because a person may understand the topic of content faster if he sees images that relate to our topic. Before reading the text.

Because images transit messages faster than text.

3. It helps us to deliver correct information – when we include images on our website, we help people to analyze information faster.

For example,

When person analyzes words:

A glass of clean water with a few slices of fresh lemon

He will have his own idea of what this object looks like, and the probability that his expectations (perception) will not match our reality is high.

Example what he has in his mind

Example what we have and want to provide

With use of images, we can say about what our website is, for example, if our website is a business that sells baling goods, it would be appropriate to add images of different cakes, muffins, etc.

But if instead of baking goods a person sees, for example, images of cars, he will leave this website, before reading text on the page, because it’s (images of cars) confusing and probably does not match his expectations.

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “Importance of visuals” slide 8

“According to the Visual Teaching Alliance:

• The brain can see images that last for just 13 milliseconds.

• Our eyes can register 36,000 visual messages per hour.

• We can get the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10 of a second.

• 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual.”
