Question #1

Part “A”

1. As discussed in class, please provide three reasons why visuals are important to web content. Please ensure you go into detail for each item. (6 Marks)

1. Attract attention – the probability that a person will start reading our article increases when we have images on our website. Because the first thing they do when they open web page they scan(skim), not read the content of the website.

It takes less time for a person to analyze images than analyze text.

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 4

“IT TAKES ONLY 13 MILLISECONDS FOR THE HUMAN BRAIN TO PROCESS AN IMAGE”

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 8

“The human brain processes visual information 60,000X faster than text”

So, in this case, if we have images on our website, it can help us catch a person’s attention faster and try to keep it.

2. Increase organic traffic – if a person clicked on our website and opened it does not mean that he will not leave this page if the visual layout of it is total text without paragraphs, bullet points and images.

All these things are important for better user experience.

Why are images important in web content?

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 5

“Infographics increase web traffic by an average of 12%”

W9 “The power of visual content” slide 6

“Viewers spend 100% more time on pages with visual content”

This data shows us that if we include images on our website, it will help us to increase engagement with our content.

It happens because a person may understand the topic of content faster if he sees images that relate to our topic. Before reading the text.

Because images transit messages faster than text.

3. It helps us to deliver correct information – when we include images on our website, we help people to analyze information faster.

For example,

When person analyzes words:

A glass of clean water with a few slices of fresh lemon

He will have his own idea of what this object looks like, and the probability that his expectations (perception) will not match our reality is high.

Example what he has in his mind

Example what we have and want to provide

With use of images, we can say about what our website is, for example, if our website is a business that sells baling goods, it would be appropriate to add images of different cakes, muffins, etc.

But if instead of baking goods a person sees, for example, images of cars, he will leave this website, before reading text on the page, because it’s (images of cars) confusing and probably does not match his expectations.

Reason and justification from power point

W9 “Importance of visuals” slide 8

“According to the Visual Teaching Alliance:

• The brain can see images that last for just 13 milliseconds.

• Our eyes can register 36,000 visual messages per hour.

• We can get the sense of a visual scene in less than 1/10 of a second.

• 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual.”

Question #2

2. This is a multi-part question. Please create a visual post for your blog on a topic specific to your business and answer the questions below. This involves critical thinking. What is important to your business and visitors? The image must be the focal point of the post telling the story or conveying a point. You may include multiple images. The goal is to visually convey a message with minimal text. Please pay attention to what was discussed in class. Ensure that you include a link to the blog post in your answer. Do not forget that this needs to be included in your hardcopy. I am marking what you hand in with your hardcopy but also need to see the digital version on your blog. If it is not online for me to view (in addition to the hardcopy), I cannot mark this question. (4 Marks)

a. Why did you choose the specific image(s)? (3 Marks)

To choose these images, the first thing that I did was ask myself “What I want to deliver to people that might be my potential customers”.

My post is about online Spanish classes. And I needed images of people (of different ages) who were learning, writing or reading something.

One more thing, also was important for me, I needed images of people learning at home (or from any other place where they feel comfortable, for example, it could be a cafe).

Also, the images had to have the same style, I was trying to do it even if it was not so easy.

And I wanted to use images that had a light tone, as color also affects human perception.

In order, to find images that I have in my post right now I used prompts such as:

  • Online classes
  • Spanish book
  • Online classes with tutor
  • Study from home

That helped me to find images what will suit to my post

b. Explain in detail why the image(s) was beneficial for the post. (3 Marks)

Images give fast and brief explanation about idea of post, in my opinion my images beneficial for my post because:

  • Show study process – each picture shows that a person is learning something. The girl in the picture in the middle learns something through communication with the tutor (we provide lessons with the tutor).

Other pictures show women who read Spanish grammar (it can be pictures of grammar books that we will provide for our students) and person will know through this image that it relates to Spanish language.

  • Include online lesson – picture at the middle immediately show people that our business is private online classes that can be conducted at home or any other place.
  • Images include people of different ages – pictures show that we provide classes not only for adults but for kids too.
  • Show format of education – through each picture we show that the learning process is something very individual.

One person likes to study something when sitting on the soft sofa, and someone likes to study in a more regular way like the girl in the middle.

Or if you want, we can make a small break during class if you feel tired and lay on the sofa like a girl on the third picture.

Question #3

3. Take a look at St. Clair Colleges website. In relation to visuals, what would you propose to St. Clair College to improve/enhance this new website to effectively market to potential incoming local domestic students. Please provide three (3) recommendations and justify your answer with detailed reasoning. (9 Marks)

If we are talking about main page of St. Clair website, I would like to provide certain changes if we talk about visual part of website.

Change #1 – change quality of picture

(in my opinion this image (with dog) is not so good quality.

Reason and justification from power point

Why we must do it

W9 –C – “Importance of visuals” slide 18

Take note: Incorrect use of visuals can also deter consumers

Poor quality images that are pixelated, low-resolution, over-compressed, or badly resized.

For example, I am a consumer who visited St. Clair website and saw this bad quality picture, what is also unproperly cropped, it would lead to a dissonance if I had been the person who relied most on visual elements in learning information. This could produce a negative effect on the first impression about college, perhaps people who developed website did work hard or simply did not pay attention to details, but price for this could be loss of potential student who could be a part of St. Clair family and pay for courses.

Change #2 – change picture (content of picture).

Reason and justification from power point

Why we must do it

W9 –C – “Importance of visuals” slide 11

Visuals have been found to improve learning by up to 400 percent.

Also, they affect learners on a cognitive level and stimulate imagination, therefore, enabling users

to process the information faster.

Stanford University’s Robert E. Horn, explained this relationship clearly:

“When words and visual elements are closely entwined, we create something new and we

augment our communal intelligence … visual language has the potential for increasing ‘human

bandwidth’—the capacity to take in, comprehend, and more efficiently synthesize large amounts of

new information.”

Based on the details provided we can see that the combination of correct image(s) and text play important roles in creating an overall impression of the college.

In my opinion the current image does not perform its function.

Most likely this dog is a symbol of the college but If I am a person who visits a website for the first time, I will probably not immediately understand the message of the picture. This picture with dog does not immediately say that this is a website of college where students’ study.

In addition, the dog on the picture merges with the background, which makes the “readability” of picture more difficult.

If I had the opportunity to change the picture, I would choose a good quality image with students.

Can be like this

Why would I use this picture:

  • Young people with books are representation of students and students’ life
  • All attention on people they do not merge with background
  • Students show positive emotions that can be a base for emotional trigger (human factor, people will go to place where other people are happy).

Change #3 use more pictures with emotional trigger, make it bigger and more clear

Reason and justification from power point

Why we must do it

W9 –C – “Importance of visuals” slide 14

Visuals cause a faster and stronger reaction than words.

They help users engage with the content, and such emotional reactions influence information

retention.

This is because the visual memory is encoded in the medial temporal lobe of the brain, the same

place where emotions are processed.

The brain is set up in a way that visual stimuli and emotional response is easily linked, and together

the two form memories.

Negative visual depictions are particularly useful for leaving a strong emotional impression.

For example, we have this headline (article), and I think we could use another picture to represent the main idea of article and create stronger emotional connection.

First thing that I would change of course it’s size of image; I would make it bigger

Removed black cover of the photo to make it more “readable”

Second replace image, it could be clearer picture where people participate in a process and show their emotions during mock pharmacy robbery

(I created it with use of GPT to show idea)

One of the students can be a “robber” and other students can wear white robes and play a role for the picture.

It may increase interest in the article, and you might want to know more details.

1. We spoke about Plain English writing in class. Please answer the following in detail

a. How would you explain to someone what “Plain English writing” is? (4 Marks)

PowerPoint Slides: Briscoe, W8 – Plain Language Writing Website Copy(W25).pdf, slide 7, slide 8, slide 9, slide 10.

PowerPoint Slides: W8 – A – Plain language writing (w25).pdf, slide 6

Slide #7 (W8 – B – Plain Language Writing Website Copy(W25).pdf ) include information that a lot of people think that Plain English (Plain Language) is a dumb English (dumb language).

But it is completely opposite thing.

The main idea of Plain language is to help us easily understand content of text.

Things what we do not (can’t) understand (jargon, specific terms, non-logical structure, etc) that’s what makes text dumb.

Meanwhile plain language is an use of “play of words” that is easy to analyze and perceive. We use different combination of words to create memorable, interesting and exciting content.

When we use plain language, we can include psychological tricks to make our sentence or text more intriguing.

For example,  we can use emotional triggers like curiosity or fear

Example of headline with plain language :“COVID 19 is here again!”

COVID 19 – something bad

Is here again – statement of fact

Combination of these words increase negative feelings.

Example of headline with non-plain language: “potentially sever acute respiratory infection is back in our country”

So, when we talk about plain language, we include a couple elements that make it “plain”

First thing is clarity, all words are easy to understand, we do not use jargon or specific terminology.

Second thing is conciseness, we do not have to make long sentences, opposite we must keep it as short as possible, because people do not have time to read long sentences.

And last thing is

 b. What makes plain English writing different? (4 Marks)

PowerPoint Slides: Briscoe, W8 – W8 – Plain Language Writing Website Copy(W25).pdf, Slide 2

My answer for this question will be based on words from slide number 2

“The simple answer is that it makes for better reading”

Rely on these words, I would say that Plain Language is a text that does not require deep analysis and is most likely became just a habit.

What do I mean by word “habit”?

A person does not read the text, but scans it, he does it automatically, that’s what I mean by word “habit”.

For example when person read word “apple” image or understanding of this word automatically appears in his mind.

Plain language includes words and phrases that are used most often in our daily life and has easy logical structure.

Example

Non plain language

“to bring ID is required, in case if you do not do that it will affect your exam, you will fail it, and will not be able to take again. ”

Plain language

“Attention: Bring your ID to have access to the exam”

First example provides more details and makes understanding of sentence more difficult.

In this case we will pay attention to things (details) we do not really need and can miss main idea of sentence.

Second example, with word “Attention” we try to show people that this sentence contains information that might be important for him, after we say what is required “bring your ID” and why is it required “to get access to exam”. It’s easy to remember and immediately lead to action.

 c. What is plain language writing for the web and in detail and in your own words, why is it important? (4 Marks)

PowerPoint Slides: Briscoe, W8 – A – Plain Language Writing (W25).pdf, Slide 18

PowerPoint Slides: Briscoe, W8 – W8 – Plain Language Writing Website Copy(W25).pdf, Slide 7

We now are literally surrounded by new technologies and digital content.

With the new technologies we also received a new habit. This habit is consuming of fast-content.

People used to getting information and analyze it quickly and easy.

From PowerPoint:

“People are spending 15 or less seconds deciding on whether to engage with a page or not”

That’s why plain language is important, because people do not have time to make a deep analysis.

Reasons why they can’t do it can be different, but main reason is laziness.

We use plain language because it is something what people can easily understand, and their brains do not have to “suffer” when consume information.

Plain language in digital must be short and easy.

Use of plain language and correct visual construction (F pattern, bullet points, fonts, etc) can lead to success, people will pay attention to our content and will consume it.

What can be if we do not use plain language?

We lose money – if we do not use plain language people simply will not consume our content, for example, if we are cosmetic brand, and want to sell our product but include difficult to understand, long terms people will not understand it and will not buy a product.

Non-plain example :The cream contains epigallocatechin-3-gallete(EGCG) blends onto the epidermis and act as antioxidants.

Regular person probably will not understand it.

Plain language example: The cream contains tea tree emulsion, which relieves skin inflammation.

When we look at the plain language example we immediately understand what ingredient cream contains and how it can help.

3. For question #2, explain how your new post successfully addresses the three main objectives of Plain English writing as discussed in class. Provide a detailed breakdown of each objective. (9 Marks)

Power point: Briscoe, W8 – Plain Language Writing Website Copy(W25).pdf, slide 3

Based on data of this powerpoint we know that plain language contains 3 main elements

  • Clear (Clarity)
  • Concise (Conciseness)
  • Correct (Informative)

My new post represents Clear (Clarity) element because I rewrote literally everything to make text easier to read and analyze. I replaced long difficult sentences with more short sentences that contain easy words.

Example

OLD

With Lengua Academia all doors are open for you, from now and forever you will have access to the best knowledge, opportunities, resources that will lead You to success!

(It’s too long, we do not provide information that person really needs, for example what language I will learn in Lengua Academia?)

NEW

Our online Spanish school is your best choice if you are looking for flexible, effective and convenient method of learning Spanish.

(it is shorter and include information that person needs to know, like what do we offer and what type of business we are, use simple words that we use in daily life)

Also, for my new post I use bullet points, paragraphs, “bold” tool to make it more readable and included specific CTA.

My new post represents conciseness, because I deleted a big part of content, and it became shorter.

My new text does not contain “water” all information is important.

In original article I had 104 words, and in a new article I have 80 words.

Also, I use plain language in my new article it makes my article more readable.

So, person will pay less time to read this article than original one.

And last thing is Correct (informative) this element is about knowing what your audience need and what we can offer.

In my new post I provided more details about my business

My headline

Welcome to Lengua Academia – Spanish school on your device!

It includes name of business and type. When person see this headline, he has general idea who is that brand and what does he do.

My description

Make button colorful it might help to attract person’s attention.

a. Describe one specific technique you used to improve readability in your revised version and explain why it is effective. (4 Marks)

For my new article I used F pattern, because people do not actually read text that scan it first, and we use specific elements of F pattern to attract person’s attention and it include things like these:

  • “Bold” tool for headlines – we must do it; it helps to split text and makes it more readable. If sentence somehow does not look the same as rest of the text it will be visible, and person will pay attention to this part.

We include it because we want person to pay attention to details that we think will be important for him or will attract his attention.

  • Bullet points – we must use it if we have a lot of information, in our case, it’s different offers, it will be easier for person to read it if we put it in a list format with bullet points, so he will be able to scan it fast and if he find something what grab his attention he can read it.
  • Different font size – for important sentences we make bigger font sizes, for example for headlines because they are important first than body copy.
  • CTA – for CTA we create specific elements like change font color, change background color, change size of fonts, and include specific text to button.

b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)

For me it was hard to create content in plain language, because sometimes I do not really know if this sentence sounds good or not in English language.

And in general, it is difficult to create content in plain language.

It just requires a lot of time to think how better to write certain things.

To overcome it I just spend more time than I expected to spend because content must be short, easy to understand and informative at the same time.

For F-pattern second time when I overviewed it did not seem so hard to do (I hope I’ve done it right this time)

After reading feedback from assignment #1 and PowerPoint it makes sense for me now.

And to create construction of F-pattern second time was not so difficult.

I’ve learnt and realized that my first article has almost nothing common with F pattern.

Now I know that:

  • For header and sub-header, I must use “bold” tool to make it stand out from other text.
  • Has different font size for different elements of article, for example, it will not be good if my paragraph and headline has the same size
  • I must use bullet points if I have list of things what I would like to provide to people, use of bullet points makes it easier to read.
  • I must add specific elements and modify CTA what will help it to stand out from other text, if I want people to click on it.
  • I must use plain language if I want people to read my content (do not use jargons, terminology, keep my sentences as short as possible etc) it will make my text clear and interesting for people.

Question 1

1. Find one (1) headline that you came across recently and thought it was great. You are to explain why it resonated with you. Please ensure that you base your answers only topics discussed in class. Meaning, based on course content discussed in class, you are to tie specific elements that we discussed constituted a “good” headline or “elements” of a good headline and how this specific element is referenced in the headline that resonated with you. (6 Marks)

This line is called “The Key to Heatly Skin – Ceramide” I found this article on the official COSRX website. This is a cosmetics band.

This article resonates with me because I have bad skin and am looking for solutions how to make my skin better.

Right now, I will provide reasons and justifications if this headline “good” or “bad”

First thing that we see that this talks about benefits and talks about problem in the positive way

  • The key to healthy skin – it refers to people who have bad skin, it resonates with them because they want to solve this problem.
  • Almost plain language of headline – this headline contains only one specific word that needs explanation. And this word is “Ceramide”. But this word will be explained in the article, what is this, how it works etc.

(Ceramide is a lipid molecule that is essential for generation of water-retention function and barrier function)

  • “Ceramide” is a key word hear – give answer what can help to achieve “healthy skin”, probably article will contain more information about this “magic remedy”

And now it is time to talk about negative features of this headline. Or what I would change in this headline.

In my opinion, it could be better to make changes like these:

  • Question format – it helps to create more personalized headline; people will pay attention to headlines if it concerns you in any way.

Example of new headline

“Is ceramide good for your skin?” or “How can ceramide make your skin healthy?”

  • Use numbers – numbers will stand out from letters in the headline, what can grab attention. Probably if headline contains number, it means that article will have certain quantity of sections (paragraphs).  Example of a new headline including number: “3 reasons to use ceramide for your skin” or “Perfect skin for 30 days with Ceramides”
  • Use superlatives – if you use words like “the best”, “worst” etc. in your headline it can increase interest in your headline, based on psychological facts of human beings. People always want to get the best and are afraid to get something bad.

For our new headline we will use negative superlative because it is 30% more effective than positive superlatives.

Example on new headline:

“You make your skin worse if don’t use Ceramide”

The presence of the word “You” in headline makes headline more personalized.

Here in this headline, we also can see “emotional trigger – fear”, because it literally says that if person does not use Ceramide, it can have harmful impact on her health.

Assignment 2

Question 2

2. As per the headline in Question #1, was the headline representative of the article? Please explain your reasoning in detail. (4 Marks)

I’ve read an article, and I can say that headline “The Key to Healthy Skin – Ceramide” totally represents the content of article.

Headlines include key words that are used in articles a lot of times words like “Ceramide”, “Healthy” and “skin”. (with help of these words can be created good keywords, that will have logical structure). It can be a good base for SEO.

The purpose of this article based on the headline name is to educate people and provide information that will help them to solve a problem, if they read it, they probably have it.

Idea of headline matches with main content of article. They tell us (promise) that they know what can help people to make their skin healthier. They provide information about what ceramide is in terms of biology, medical and cosmetic industry.

Tell about its benefits, how it works, who can use it.

They promised to give us a key, they did it, including all necessary information what we must know before acting. Because in this case we read an article to buy medicine that will help to make our skin healthier.

After descriptive sections we got a link to a product that might help us.
